The Brief

A football-centric platform that enabled subscribers an inside glimpse into their footballing icon’s lives, OTRO is the first of its kind and has been compared to Spotify, having signed partnerships with the likes of Messi, Neymar, Beckham, Zidane, and more this app is perfect for any football fanatic.

The Challenge

With the likes of Netflix, Amazon, and Apple already leading the way for video streaming services, OTRO knew they were becoming newcomers in a very competitive market that was controlled by only a few. This was the main challenge facing new adopters OTRO.

However, OTRO possessed something these big streaming services did not, the rights to record and share exclusive content of 17 of the biggest footballing stars and legends in the world today. The only problem now facing them is how are they going to deliver this to multi-lingual fans around the world so that all benefit from the subscription model.

The Solution

Building a completely bespoke back-end with Java, ReactJS, and React Native with a microservice architecture, our in-house developers made sure they were market-leading features available to both the footballing icons sharing the content as well as the fans viewing it.

Providing an approval system for the players and their teams, so that they can review and publish any content that has been created from their provided footage with an included subtitle feature that auto translates any content created to the 9 base languages of OTRO’s customer base.

A fully interactive platform that provided subscribers the chance to comment on their icon’s content and take part in live competitions to receive unimaginable prizes.

All video content was delivered through a custom IPTV solution that splits livestreams into a magnitude of bitrates to compensate for subscribers who have access to both high and low internet speeds, meaning no matter the internet connection it was a buffer-free experience. 

The Result

After a successful global launch of the application, OTRO opted to move away from a subscription-based-only model to also provide a ‘freemium’ service, meaning some content was locked until the user opted to upgrade due to the market evolving because of the pandemic.

Otro has since become more of a studio, working in conjunction with broadcasters and digital platforms offering access to footballing documentaries and content when there is no live sport on.
